Learn Photography in the Field — Not a Classroom

An autumn sunset over a rugged Lake Superior archipelago.

Most photography workshops focus heavily on camera settings.

That matters—but it’s only part of the picture.

These workshops are built to help you:

  • Understand your camera with confidence

  • Create stronger compositions in natural environments

  • Work with changing light, weather, and conditions

  • Adapt your approach across landscape, wildlife, and outdoor subjects

  • Leave with images you’re proud of

You’ll spend the day actively photographing, with guidance available as you need it.

What You’ll Learn

Each workshop adapts to the subject and conditions, but typically includes:

  • Camera fundamentals (aperture, shutter speed, ISO)

  • Composition and visual storytelling

  • Working with natural light and weather

  • Photographing movement (water, wildlife, wind)

  • Scene evaluation and creative decision-making

  • Adapting techniques across outdoor photography subjects

A True Upper Peninsula Photography Experience

These workshops are designed around the landscapes of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula — not a fixed script.

Each session blends technical photography with a naturalist’s approach to place and story. Depending on the season, locations may include:

  • Lake Superior shorelines and cliffs

Read waves, wind, and light to create images that reflect the power and scale of one of the most dynamic freshwater coastlines in the world.

  • Waterfalls and forest interiors

Balance motion and stillness while working with layered compositions in complex forest environments.

  • Seasonal color and changing weather

Use timing, weather patterns, and seasonal transitions to create images with mood and meaning.

  • Milky Way & Night Sky Photography (when available)
Learn to shoot the stars under some of the darkest skies in Michigan.

  • Wildlife Photography (when available)
Track light, weather, and animal behavior for powerful compositions.

  • Conservation Photography
Explore how photography can advocate for the places and species you love.

  • Fieldcraft and Ecology for Photographers
Understand your subject and setting to elevate your storytelling.

Each experience is built around conditions, timing, and access to give you the best possible photographic opportunities.

Small Group Photography Workshops (Max 6 Participants)
