Ancient Roots, Infinite SkiesA 300+ year-old Northern White-cedar holds firm in the rocky shore of Lake Superior is silhouetted against the northern lights and air glow. Also seen in the picture are the Pleiades star cluster and the Andromeda Galaxy, a shooting star, home lights along the shore and car lights on Brockway Mountain. I marvel at the idea of what this tree has been witness to.
Corona KeeperAn aurora borealis corona bursts above a decommissioned coast guard lighthouse in Michigan’s Keweenaw.
Rooted in StardustA lone spruce anchors the shoreline, silhouetted against the great river of stars. Here on Silver Island, where bedrock meets dark water and sky, time folds into the stillness. The Milky Way climbs behind its needles like ancestral smoke, reminding us: we, too, are brief flames flickering in the night—rooted, but always looking up.
Reeds of Winter FireA mid-winter aurora appears to set the cattails ablaze.
The Pine Also RisesThe northern lights backdrop a white pine along Lake Superior's shore at Esrey Park, Keweenaw County. This is a well know tree that’s been photographed many times by many people….but I had not seen it in this light before I took this photo.
Photobomb borealisWhile taking pictures of the northern lights, another photographer set up directly in front of me and a small group of students walked by while viewing a cellphone.
While the Keeper SleepsA decommissioned Lake Superior lighthouse, backdropped by an undulating aurora.
Beacon Without a CauseA decommissioned Lake Superior lighthouse - providing light for no ships.

Perseids with Airglow 2023A picture of the 2023 Perseid meteor shower from the Hole #5 Fairway at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge, Copper Harbor, MI. The purples and greens on this picture are a good example of airglow…which is similar but less intense than the Aurora borealis.
